Lessons 17 - 19: Stories of Courage

a. The title picks up on the first half of Spike J’s saying. It means that some days you are confident of your abilities and in control; everything seems to go right. And other days are the opposite—everything seems to be out of your control, and you begin to doubt your abilities.

b. Responses will vary. Look for reasoned responses for students’ views.

c. Again, responses will vary. They should, however, be comparable to the following:

The title “Some Days You’re the Puppy” sums up the writer’s message—that some days you are confident of your abilities and in control, while other days everything seems to be out of your control. Students may also suggest that the writer is saying that it takes courage to deal with life’s ups and downs.

2. The following are possible responses.

a. If someone in a chat room asked me for personal information, such as my address or phone number, I would not give it to them.

b. I would never agree to meet him or her. That would be like accepting a ride from a stranger.

c. If someone in a chat room sent me an obscene message, I would tell my parent or teacher.

3. Responses will vary. Students must provide support for their opinions.

4. Use the assessment criteria provided in the assignment to assess students’ paragraphs.

5. Use the checklist and the assessment criteria provided in the assignment to assess students’ personal narratives.
